Throwback Thursday

14 years down the track we look back on our involvement in the first ever block with the winning couple Adam and Fiona Thorn. We were fortunate enough to collaborate with Adam and Fiona to put together a timeless bathroom design based on a balinese theme.

Adam and Fiona’s apartment was the highest selling apartment in the block. The bidding opened for Fiona and Adam’s bottom storey, two bedroom unit with courtyard for $600,000 and was swiftly sold to an anonymous female bidder for $751,000. The bathroom was inspired by a hotel bathroom Fiona saw in Bali. To this day we still collaborate and work closely along side Adam with his current and previous jobs.

Favourites from the beginning of the series, Fiona and Adam toasted their win and kissed for the cameras after sealing their victory.

“We’re going to sell our house … and given the opportunity we’ll buy something like this in Bondi,” said Fiona, who recently modelled for men’s magazine, Ralph.

“We never came into this whole renovation thing thinking … we want to be celebrities,” Adam said.

“We came in thinking hey, we’ve renovated three places before … and we think we’ve got a fair chance of winning it.”

The couple have also renovated their Banksia home in Sydney’s south and previously overhauled properties in Canterbury and Penrith.

Handy tips for colour matching grout

87558f7b5e9e05b9ed9e1e869a5b4c1f

When completing a tile project our clients will often spend hours with us carefully selecting tiles for each room in the house and then when it comes to grout most have not even consider what colour they would use to match each tile. Grout is an often over looked part of the tiling process that gets only a moments thought once the tile selection has been made.

However, your choice of grout colour plays a huge part in the overall look of your tiles, it also plays a big part in the regular maintenance of the grout, as the lighter it is the more the dirt and grime will show up.

If you visit the Design Tiles showroom at Rockdale we can help you match your colour to your sample tiles using our Mapei Grout chart and the expertise of our colour and design consultant Dianna. Once you have decided which Mapei Grout is going to work best you need to make sure you have the right tools for the job so here is a list of what you may need:

  • Regular sponge
  • Large sponge
  • Grout float
  • Dry cloth
  • Some thin dowel
  • A clean bucket
  • A grout saw

img_1395

To ensure your grout works for you follow the below tips for colour matching your grout.

Tip 1: Blend your grout to your tile colour

Unless you want the grout to stand out more than your tile select a colour in a similar shade preferably a neutral shade that will fade away, disguise stains. For a white tile it is no longer vouge to use starch white grout, we now know it is better to use a light grey grout to hide marks and help show the tile off rather than the grout.

Blakehurst Bathroom Reno-2016

Tip 2: Use dark grout to create a bold look

Dark grout on a white subway tile creates a retro, bold and industrial look and even better helps to mask any stains so is perfect in a shower or kitchen area. On the flip side white grout with a dark tile creates a similar striking effect

Tip 3: Choose a good quality grout

Just like your tiles choosing the right quality grout can make all the difference to your overall finished product. Design Tiles only stocks Mapei Ultra Colour Plus grout and matching silicone.

Mapei grout is Italian made and contains BioBlock technology which blocks varies types of mould from forming in humid conditions and DropEffects technology which provides high water repellent properties making Ultracolour Plus less prone to dirtiness with excellent durability. Mapei grout dries quickly while ensuring colour is uniform, making floor and wall tiles ready for use quicker.

The Year of the Hex

In terms of shapes, its undoubtedly the year of the hex..

4 Inspirational ways to use a Hexagon Tile:

1. Floor

To create an authentic rustic floor as a point of interest, whether it be in the entrance to your home or bathroom floor this definitely is a wow factor!

2. Feature Wall

Whether it be a bathroom feature wall or bedroom feature wall the range of hexagon tiles at Design Tiles come in plain colours or a decorative patterns.

Opportunity 14000

Opportunity 14000

3. Splashback

Instead of going with the ordinary white subway tiles, try using a funky looking hexagon mosaic which can look quite smart with a nice stone bench top.

4. External Feature Wall

Its predictable to use some type of stack stone outside but use your imagination to create something exciting from the hexagon tile range for some visual texture oppose to the tangible texture of stack stone.

Ideally hexagon tiles break the boundaries of traditional squares or rectangle schemes by decorating your space with contemporary perspectives and creative opportunities. Hexagons recaptures the taste for decoration by  making any type of style more interesting. Hexagonal tiles extend from the geometrical to the stylised floral motif to create extremely decorative ambiances which, at the same time, are also minimal. The patterns can be mixed, creating an infinite number of combinations from each range.

Get The Look: Industrial Style with a Polished Concrete Tile!

One of the biggest trends this year is the beautiful raw texture of the concrete look tile. We’d like to draw your attention to an Italian product range that provides a unique pattern on every tile to be used both internal and externally. The beauty of this product is that the pattern is not repeated. The Downtown concrete series, is a full body porcelain tile collection manufactured with the latest Digital Ink-Jet Technology. The Downtown series is a non-porous tile and requires no sealing or maintenance. Exposed aggregates and a range of neutral tones replicate the look of concrete that has been walked on thousands of times.

Another beautiful concrete look series is Design Tile’s Varese Series which has the sheer elegance of that industrial appeal and yet the sophistication of polished concrete floor. The Varese Series is available in three fashionable colours which are Light, Medium & Dark; a feature tile named Fossil is also available to compliment the Dark colour. The versatility of this beautiful range is due to the variable sizing which makes it suitable for multi use applications. Sizes available are 200x200mm, 300x300mm, 300x600mm & 600x600mm

The benefits of  tiles that look like concrete opposed to the real thing is that most tiles that look like concrete are glazed porcelain, and the great thing about a glazed porcelain tile is once laid there is no maintenance and no sealing (except for the general cleaning of course!)

The tile industry has caught onto the popularity of this natural look, it’s got the Italian, Spanish and Asian tile manufacturers in frenzy producing almost true to concrete look tiles. I have to say there sure is an abundance of beautiful tiles to replicate the concrete look!

How much should you be paying for your tiles?

When it comes to buying tiles, I always say don’t skimp on quality. One common question asked is how much should I be paying for my tiles? Why are some tiles more than others when it’s the same material?

Sure, paying less is always a win but not all bargain’s are savings, usually it’s skimping on the quality of the product, with the right guidance you will know what tile  product is of quality and what is not.

That satisfaction you get from a saving a few dollars on a cheaper tile product in the long run can be turned into a costly and stressfull exercise when the product doesn’t perform like it should!

So often people are tempted to buy tiles that are copies of a quality tiles they originally chose for the sake of usually only a small amount in saving, they have taken second best on a tile that they will see and use every day of their lives for the next 10 or so years.

Yes, there are sometimes genuine bargains, where we can help you save on your tile selection, our design consultants at Design Tiles will definitely help you achieve the look you want for the best price possibleand not compromise on quality.

If there is only a relatively small difference in the final cost, it is worth paying that little bit more to get what you want.

Blues Hues…

At the moment I am really loving that real raw concrete, warm and natural texture! The warmer Greys or lime wash whites with hint of grey under tones are such beautiful neutral tones that really leave your pallet open to adding any splash of colour or texture! Why not use a colour that complements a natural look possessing a natural hue itself ?

The trend is back with using Blue hues; weather it is a deep navy blue or soft sky blue… Why not add some relaxing blue hues to your scheme wether it be tiles, paint or a throw over for your lounge, blues are definitely making an elegant comeback!

The warmer Greys or lime wash whites with hint of grey under tones are such beautiful neutral tones that really leave your pallet open to adding any splash of colour or texture! Why not use a colour that complements a […]

To Match Grout Lines or Not…?

To match grout lines or not to match grout lines is one of the most common questions a client will ask.

Back in the day when most tiles had cushion edges, matching the grout lines between floor and wall tiles was a must! This was due to the shadowing between each tile, a cushion edge tile crates the grout joint in turn would be wider which would make each tile more pronounced. But as we know, technology has evolved in the way tile products are made, and not just with computers and smart phones.

Fast forward to the 21st century in tiles, we now have tiles that look like real timber planks, natural stone and nearly any type of surface you can think of but the best part of it all, tile manufacturers are now pretty much only making rectified tiles (straight cut on the edges).

So how does this make it ok intermixing sizes of tiles you say? Well he Answer is simple! The fact the tile is straight cut, your tiles have a more panneled appearance and using a clouded grout to each tile also really adds to that. So in saying it’s less noticeable if the grout doesn’t match up, then you add to your bathroom the shower screen, vanity toilet and all the pc items and there you have it a distraction to your eye!

So unless you are going for a dramatic look, you only want people to notice your tiles and not your grout. Let your tiles be the star when selecting grout. But if you want each tile to stand out choose a contrasting grout colour.

Tips

  • If you want to minimize maintenance try selecting a darker coloured grout and apply sealant to grout.
  • Help increase slip resistance by using more grout joints especially in an area like the shower.

Texture vs Plain Tiles

Over the years clients come into the showroom inspired by images they see over the internet, magazines and home shows on TV of unique feature tiles that really impact a room giving a WOW factor..

Then we put a scheme together with textured tiles that create the look that they desire… Then all of the sudden reality hits and they say ‘ohhh I don’t know if I could do that! What if it dates?’  Then the client is tempted to bail out and opt for a real pain generic option. Don’t get me wrong, plain is still nice but if it is not done correctly it can leave a space like a bathroom looking really stark and lifeless.

The way to over come a fear of using texture whether it be visual texture in a tile or tangible is simple, keep it monochromatic, for example using a plain gloss white rectified 300 x 600mm wall tile for your base tile to create a canvas for you to add one of our many large formate spanish 316 x 900mm or 330 x 1000mm wall tiles in a white with a subtle abstract pattern in it to create a fresh look to a wall in your shower recess will not only lift your plain white walls to give  an elegant simple texture which surely withstand the test of time you won’t regret!

Light Tiles vs Dark Tiles

These days when it comes to renovating or building we have so many options to choose from when it comes to tiling our home.

10 years ago when I started as Design Consultant at Design Tiles, the choices of tiles were so limited. A floor tile was only used for the floor and not the wall. But over time, tiles have evolved and now they can be used anywhere and the only limitation is your imagination! Tiles come in all shapes, sizes, finishes and textures which can create or be designed into the desired look you are after.

From the ever so popular wall tile, White Gloss Rectified 300 x 600 mm, which creates the perfect paneled look for when you want simplicity or just a painted surface so you can add an exciting feature wall tile. Adding a feature wall tile will make your room exciting which will stand out, the gorgeous geometric shapes like the Hexagon tiles create fun and texture to your bathroom floor or wall or kitchen splashback.

But I must say, my favorite look at the moment is the deeper warm grey and monochromatic tones..keeping the floor and wall tiles in the bathroom in the same deeper tone, creates such a dramatic but classy look to any size bathroom.

‘But doesn’t that close in the space and make the room look smaller? You say?’ My reply is always ‘NO’, but only if you follow these simple rules :

1. Use Larger wall tiles – When using larger wall tile in a small space no matter the colour a 600 x 600 mm tile for example instead of a 300 x 600 mm less grout joints, also opt for a rectified tile (straight cut) not a cushion edge (round edge tile) on the wall which space automatically appears larger.

2. Using a Lappato or Gloss Tile – Lappato/Semi Gloss or Gloss finish for the walls. The reflective surface warms and brightens up the room.

3. Match your grout – Matching your colour grout and smaller grout joints create a seamless appearance. When you highlight the tile with a different coloured grout you end up creating less space in your room. Not highlighting it and choosing a coloured grout that matches your tile add the illusion of more space in a room.

4. Use the same tile – It Doesn’t matter about size or shape but keeping the colour the same when tiling the floor and wall will give your bathroom that seemless look. There will be no harsh point of break to the horizontal and vertical  surface, again creating a scene of space.

5. Lighting – lastly if you don’t have sufficient lighting then the space will look dull, lighting makes or breaks any scheme!!!

Follow these simple rules to create that more intimate style in your bathroom ….

A Guide In Choosing Tiles

Today, we will be talking about the varying qualities of outdoor tiles.

Outdoor tiles can either make or break a person’s first impression of your home and know that the first impression always last and is important and may pose a significant decision in your typical home maintenance procedures.

Here are a few things you need to take into consideration when choosing your outdoor tile, apart from its design:

  • Durability. When choosing the best outdoor tile for your home, you need to take into consideration the climate where your home resides. Are there times where it’s extremely cold during the winter and extremely hot during the summer time? Most tiles are affected by the climate. Make sure that you choose a tile that can withstand extreme changes in temperature.
  • Non-slip. Some tiles can become very slippery when wet. There is NO such thing as a non-slip tile but there are ways where you can lessen the possibility of having a slippery tile. To prevent slip and fall accidents, you can choose a tile that is slightly abrasive. You can also add more grout lines to provide more traction for your feet.
  • Hardness. If tiles are too soft, they can crack and chip easily from everyday use. You should choose an outdoor tile that is hard and dense, capable of resisting constant footwork.
  • Maintenance. Proper maintenance is critical. Wrong maintenance products or wrong maintenance methods at all can result in a build-up on the surface of the tile causing it to become slippery or discolored by filth.

Above all, choose the best outdoor tile that will match your home’s overall style. Remember that your outdoor tiles are exposed to elements on a daily basis so make sure that you choose an outdoor floor tile that will withstand sudden climate changes, is durable, can be maintained easily, and is hard and dense.

Let and celebrate the rebirth of Subway Tiles!

Subway tiles may add a traditional feel to a place, but their look certainly never gets old. They became popular for use in public spaces (subways) because of their durability and easy-to-clean properties. The traditional ceramic subway tiles, usually in white with flat and high glazed surfaces, are commonly applied horizontally with matching grout lines to achieve a classic and endless look. However, new stylised takes on the original designs have introduced countless styles and colours that adapt to every look.

At Design Tiles we have a wide selection of subway tiles suitable for both domestic and commercial applications, for the classic to the most wild styles.
For a clean, simple and friendly look, apply single-color tiles in walls and back-splashes. Use tiles with concave surface or crackle finish to add depth and movement.

Beveled edge tiles will suit both traditional and contemporary styled rooms. Matt and Satin tiles create a subtle texture that will soften the look, while Gloss finish is a beautiful choice for modern settings. If you are looking for something fierce, use a Mirror finish that no one will forget.
